It’s not easy to summarize my volunteer experience at Window of Life in just a few sentences, but saying that after my first three-month stay, I returned there again within the same year, is probably the best proof that this is a magical place—one you want to return to and one you can’t help but miss! If I could, I would go back every year!
The atmosphere of the home, its warm, family-like environment created by the young and older residents, the aunts, and the Window friends, made me feel like part of the family from the very first days.
I came to Masindi with the mission of teaching children basic computer skills, but my involvement wasn’t limited to just that role. I was more than happy to wake up early to help with the morning routine and walk the children to school. The orange-red road leading there and the crisp African mornings will always bring back a sense of nostalgia.
After school, I helped the children with their homework—though, as in any household, there were moments of resistance, negotiations, and ice cream bribes to encourage them.
