Kamila December 2018 - March 2019

It’s not an easy task to sum up my three months spent in Masindi as a volunteer at Window of Life, but if I told you that I went there twice in the same year, surely it’s the best testimony of how magical and special this place is. It was impossible not to miss being there and if I could, I would be going back there every year!

The atmosphere in the house created by the children, aunties and friends of Window of Life, made me feel welcome and at home from the very beginning.

My main volunteering goal was to teach the children basic computer skills, but I was very happy to get involved in many other house chores and activities. Believe it or not, but I was keen to wake up early in the mornings to help with getting the children ready for school. To walk along the orange colour road leading to it, was my favourite part of the day. I will forever feel nostalgic about that part of my volunteering journey.

After school I helped the children with their school work, but like in every household it didn’t go without some serious encouraging and even bribes! Occasional ice cream first, then play time usually got the job done.

Cooking is not one of my strongest skills , so rather than spoiling it for everyone I was offering my help with washing up after the meals. I wasn’t doing it on my own. There was always someone ready to give me a hand.

I wasn’t the only ‘teacher’ in the house. The kids were patiently trying to teach me their dance moves. Don’t ask about the results. Apparently you can’t teach the rhythm. You are either born with it or not and I am certainly not a natural
